FAQ about the course
Quite simply: WAB stands for advanced training. Obtaining a probationary driving license for new drivers is considered basic training, the WAB course is advanced training in the interest of driver safety.
Since December 1, 2005 the new regulation in the SVG is in force. According to this, the driver’s license is no longer issued definitively after passing the practical test, but for a probationary period of 3 years. As a new driver, you are obliged to complete the WAB course in the first year after passing the driving test. Only then – and after the 3 years – will you receive a definitive driver’s license.
New drivers between the ages of 18 and 24 have a higher accident frequency than all other road users, as statistics show. Therefore, the legislator has decided to ensure safe driving behavior and practical experience before a definitive driving license is issued. As the statistics show, accidents among young drivers have decreased disproportionately since the introduction of the WAB course. Thanks to the course, novice drivers are spared unnecessary suffering and costs. The WAB course shows you how to drive better with confidence.
In most cantons, you will automatically receive the permanent driver’s license about a week before the expiration of the temporary license, provided that you have attended the WAB course according to the regulations. It is important that you have your current address on file at the Road Traffic Office. For other cantons of residence, you may have to submit the course confirmation. This will be issued to you after completion of the course. The best way to find out more is to visit the homepage of the road traffic office in your canton of residence.
This is usually not a problem. In this case, your course confirmation can also be printed out later by the training center you attended for a processing fee.
After the expiration date of the probationary driver’s license, you are no longer allowed to drive a vehicle in the corresponding category A or B. You now have 3 months to complete the course. You will need a daily driving permit, which can be requested from the responsible road traffic office after you have registered for the WAB course. Attention: If you drive a vehicle of category A or B without a driver’s license, you are liable to prosecution and you will have to answer for driving without a valid license! If you are unsure about requesting a daily driving permit, I will be happy to help you.
In case of a minor violation, you will receive a fine or a warning. In the case of a serious or moderate violation of the Road Traffic Act (SVG), on the other hand, your driving license will be revoked for a certain period of time and your probationary period will be extended by one year. In case of a second driving license withdrawal, you will lose the driving privilege completely. If you want to drive a motor vehicle again, you must submit a new application for a learner’s permit. In addition to the usual documents, you must enclose a traffic psychology report from an officially recognized agency that confirms your fitness to drive. Either way, the new learner’s permit will be issued to you at the earliest one year after the offence has been committed. It is therefore worth respecting the law!
